VORWORT.

Das Ericbeinen des 13. Band» hat durch die unglücklichen wirtschaft-
lichen und politischen Verhältnisse, in die Deutschland geraten ist, eine un-
liebsame Veriägemng erfahren. Doch hofft der Unterieichncte , diu nach
Wiederaufnahme der während der Kriegsieil unterbrochenen Verbindungen
mit den ausländischen Mitarbeitern und nach entsprechender Vermehrung des
wissenschaftlichen Mitarbeiteritabes der Redaktion es ermöglicht wird, das
alte Programm, jährlich iwei Bände herauszugeben, in allernächster Zukunft
wieder durchzuführen. In der Redaktion waren wShrend der lernen Jahre nur
die Herren Dr. Hanl Vollmer, Johannes Kurzwclly, Dr. Bernd Curt Kreplin so-
wie Fräulein Minna von Zahn — und, bedauerlicherweise nur vorübergehend.
Herr Dr. Ludwig Burehard — bescliäitigt. Erwähnt sei bei dieser Gelegen-
heit, dafi an die Stelle des zurückgetretenen Herrn Dr. Andreas Röder-
Kopenhagen Herr Dr. O. Andrup, Museunisinspektor am Nationalmuteum su
Frederiksborg Slot, Kopenhagen, in dankenswerter Weise die Redaktinn der
Artikel der dänischen Künstler übernommen hat.

Dl der Unten ei ebnete durch andauernde Krankheit leider verhindert war,

haben die genannten Herren - in erster Linie Herr Dr. Vollmer, der in Stell-
vertretung des Herausgebers die Geschäfte und die Drucklegung des [3. Bandes

in tragen gehabt, wofür ihnen besonderer Dank gebührt.

Leider hat der Unterzeichnete den Verlust von vier seiner rührigsten
ständigen auswärtigen Mitarbeiter als Opfer des Krieges zu beklagen: Prof.
Dr. Jaro Springer -Berlin, Dr. Oskar Pollak-Wicn, Museumsdirektor Dr.
Theodor Raspe -Oldenburg und Dr. Georg Sobotka - Wien. Auch sonst bat
seit Erscheinen des letzten Bandes der Tod bedauerliche Lücken in die Reihen
der Mitarbeiter gerissen. Verstorben sind: Museumsdirektor P. Haverkorn
van Rijsewijfc- Rotterdam, Prol. Dr. Hvacinth Holland - München , der Nestor
unserer Mitarbeiter, ferner Muieumadirektor Prof. Dr. Albrecht Kurzwelly-
Leipzig. Muscumsdircktor Dr. Wilhelm Keitmann- Riga, Museumsdirektor Dr.
Ludwig Obeniner-Ttient, Prof. Dr. Bruno Sauer -Kid, der in selbständiger
Redaktion die Artikel der sämtlichen antiken Künstler besnrgte, und Carl
Schirek-Brünn. Ihnen allen wird der Herausgeber lür ihre wertvolle Hilfe
dankbare Erinnerung bewahren.

Wie in befürchten, war es leider nicht möglich, bei der finanziellen Not'
läge Deutschlands dem Lexikon die seil 19IJ auf eine Reihe von Jahren ge-
währte staatliche Subvention anch weiterhin aul längere Zeit tu sichern. Die
Fortführung des Unternehmens wäre daher tatsächlich in Frage gestellt ge-
wesen, wenn nicht eine kürclich angeregte, aber noch nicht abgeschlossene
Hilfsaktion io privaten Kreisen Deutschlands and des neutralen Auslandes in
die Wege geleitet worden wäre, die schon eine so bedeutende Summe, be-
sonders aus Holland und Schweden, dem Künstlcrlcxikon zur Verfügung ge-

wieder gesichert ist. Näheres darüber mitzuteilen behält sich der Herausgeber
lür das Vorwort des kommenden Bandes vor, bis eu dessen Erscheinen das
endgültige Ergebnis dies« im Interesse der Kunstwissenschaft mit gröStem
Danke zu begrüBenden Aktion feststehen wird. Der Hillsfonds soll, wie auch
schon die früheren staatlichen und privaten Subventionen, lediglich im- Be-
streitung der Unterhaltungskosten des Redaktions bureaus dienen, aber nicht tur
eigentlichen Herstellung des Lexikons mit verwendet werden, die nach wie
vor finanziell auf eignen Fügen steht. Leider liflt sich durch die enorm ge-
stiegenen Kosten der Drucklegung eine Erhöhung des Preises des Leiikons
für die Zukunft nicht umgehen.
